Message from the President

Life is short, art long, opportunity fleeting, experience treacherous, judgement difficult. -- Hippocrates (460-400 B.C.)

I recently ran into this message to us from Hippocrates.  It spoke to me on so many different levels.

“Life is short”
This spring and summer I tried to do my part for the Japan Earthquake fundraising.  With kind contributions from organizations like MAA, we had raised $50,000.  Thank you very much to you all.  With limited time in the studio, I still managed to participate in the recent Anagama firing in Fairhope.  I went there after work on Friday night but I never got tired and really enjoyed the physical job of firing the kiln.  Working to create something with a fun group of people who share same goal is pure fun for me.  MAA provides that kind of opportunity for me.  MAA workshop committee has come up with a Winter 1-day workshop series for 2012.  I hope to spend lots of quality time together with members.

“art long”
Since my time was limited this summer, I did many last-minute creations for Anagama.  Well, I should have known.  Most of them did not make it out of the bisque firing.  I rushed and did not take my time.  Art is like a demanding partner.  You have to spend a lot of time if you want to have a good relationship.  If you don’t care, it is time to break up or start on the new one.  No good (great) art comes out when you don’t give your 100% attention.

“opportunity is fleeting”
How many times did you miss out on the great workshop or great exhibit opportunity?  Have you ever regretted or even got upset about not knowing?  It is not easy to keep up with all what is going on for artists like us.  MAA tries to help you stay a little more informed by our new website and e-mailing system.  So, please make sure that we have your most current e-mail address.  If you don’t have one or have not used one yet, let me know.  I will be happy to help you to create a free e-mail address for your art activity.

“experience treacherous”
I really think that experience does help to create better art works.  The more we practice, the more we learn, and we think that we are getting closer to the artist we want to be.  However, as an artist, I believe that we need to be open-minded and also have willingness to try new ideas.  Sumi-e lesson provided by the Shibui Chapter is a great example.  Sumi-e technique will strengthen all painters.  It focuses on the brush use.  And, limited color helps you to really concentrate on value, too.

“judgement difficult”
How many of you have over done it before and ruined your art work?  We have to learn to stop.  Until then, please feel free to bring your Work-in-Progress paintings or other artworks to the monthly meeting for member inputs.  This is another great benefit you have by attending the meeting. As a new president, I am learning to make different types of judgement calls.  It is not easy since I am still learning the process.  However, I am really looking forward to leading MAA.  We already have a great group of members who share the same interests.  I would like all of you to be involved and share your art with us at the Monthly meeting.

See you at the September meeting.
